About this Item
The name of Mary Elizabeth Unger (1871-1944) is usually associated with the introduction of the bonsai (or dwarf) trees to the American public. She was a wife of Alfred Unger who was working for Louis Boemer at the Yokohama Nursery in the late Meiji era. The Yokohama Nursery became the most famous trader of the exotic Japanese plants and assembling accessories such as planters and vases. In terms of efficient advertisement of the Nursery advertisement Boemer and Unger made an agreement with Takujiro Hasegawa, a prominent Japanese publisher. As a result the advertising ephemera and books published for the Yokohama Nursery are the masterpieces of the Meiji and Showa era publishing. The book is illustrated with colourful Japanese flower compositions, such as sakura, persimmons, lilies, peonies, iris, magnolia, bamboo, azalia, camelia, lotus, chrysanthemum, maples, bonsai etc. First published in 1901. Text in English. In 8vo. 24,3x18,5 cm. [8]+59+[2]pp. Woodblock printed book. Butterfly binding. Celadon silk binding. Pasted down title slip on golden-silver flecked paper. Spine sunburned. Otherwise near fine condition. Seller Inventory # 1436
