About this Item
Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann, 1880. Large 4to (33.5 x 27.5 cm). [ii], 76 pp.; ten text engravings, nine lithographed plates, of which one in full colour and the others partly coloured, or tinted. Original wrappers with printed text and wood engraving of the Institute's building in Naples. = Very rare and very beautifully illustrated monograph of the Cuvier's fish genus Fierasfer. Published on behalf of the new Zoological Station in Naples as the second monograph in the series, "Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel". The Station was founded by Chun's compatriot Anton Dohrn. "Dohrn's idea was to establish an international scientific community provided with laboratory space, equipment, research material and a library. This was supported and funded by the German Government, Thomas Henry Huxley, Charles Darwin, Francis Balfour and Charles Lyell among others. Dohrn provided a substantial sum himself." (Wikipedia). The large plates are printed by Werner & Winter Lithographische Anstalt in Frankfurt am Main and are of excellent quality. Also present is a loose-leaf list of subscribers in 1881, which includes the emperor of Prussia, the king of Italy, and Charles Darwin. A second insertion contains a list of monographs to be published in this series. Uncut, thus with the widest possible margins. A very good, clean copy with fine, clean plates. Nissen ZBI, 2100.
