New edition. Octavo. 213mm. Physical description, [5] v - vii [1], [5] 6 - 167 [1]. All edges gilt. With a half title. The contents are occasionally lightly spotted and lightly browned. Bound in light brown goatskin rubbed, the covers with an outer floral frame in blind, enclosing a single line gilt fillet frame with gilt flowers in the corners, spine divided into five panels by four broad gilt raised bands, with floral decorations in blind in the panels. Upper joint starting at the lower end. Dark green endpapers, the front endpaper with a previous owners name in ink, both hinges cracked. The poem was first published in 1820. Overall a near very good copy. Henry Hart Milman (1791 - 1868) dean of St. Paul's. Educated at Eton, and Brazennose College, Oxford.' The groundwork of the poem is to be found in Josephus, but the events of a considerable time are compressed into a period of about 36 hours' - from the Introduction. " The Fall of Jerusalem quickly caught the public attention, and was crowned with most general applause. The subject had strong hold on our sympathies . 8vo (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches), 167-pages. Contemporary full grained green calf, gilt rules & ornaments to sides, spine blocked in gilt with lyres in 5 compartments and gilt lettered direct. Blue silk endpapers blocked in blind and floral gilt, all edges gilt. The front free endpapers ruckled where silk glued to paper. Overall a most attractive binding in very good condition.
