About this Item
Two volumes. [5],xxii-lii,366; [4],511pp. Half titles. Contemporary French half calf, modestly gilt, salmon-colored boards with vellum corners. A lovely, uncut copy. First French edition, variant issue, of this classic of American political theory. This is also the first edition to identify the otherwise anonymous authors, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Another French edition, with a long introduction by M. Trudaine de la Sablière, the French translator, was also published by Buisson in 1792, and its omission explains the pagination in the present item. The present variant retains the original titlepage, with John Jay's name misspelled as "Gay," and uses the same sheets from the other 1792 printing. This French translation was the first to appear after the original first printing of 1788, in accord with the definite sympathies which existed between the two countries. HOWES H114, "aa."
