First published in Britain in 1844 & the U.S. in 1845, this is an entertaining account of a trip in the 1830s to Constantinople, Smyrna, Beirut, Palestine, the Jordan, Egypt, Damascus & other points east; encountering holy men, eccentrics, Lady Hester Stanhope, a plaguey Frenchman, camels, Bedouin, the 'Prophet' Damoor; many others. This edition includes a frontispiece portrait and biographical sketch of the author by Alex. Innes Shand. Hardcover, full brown leather, gilt titling & decoration.
