Four vols in two, full parchment bindings with pale brown morocco title labels lettered in gilt. Foolscap 8vo (170 mm); xii, 412, [2], 390, [2]; [iv], 390, [2], [388] pp. Bindings slightly soiled, tips of corners a touch rubbed. No internal markings or old inscriptions. A solid and clean set on Montaigne's Essays originally publishsed during the years 1570 to 1592. English journalist and politician J. M. Robertson argued that Montaigne's essays had a profound influence on the plays of William Shakespeare, citing their similarities in language, themes and structures (Wikipedia).
