About this Item
Original hand-colored engraving. Engraved image has a plate line, but no watermark on the paper. Fair to good condition, with water stains at edges and top. The image depicts a somewhat skeletal Charles François Dumouriez, a French general during the French Revolution who deserted and joined the opponents of the Revolution in early 1793. The image depicts Dumouriez being offered enticements to treason by French Royalists. Published by John Miller, Bridge Street, London & W. Blackwood, Edinburgh. This contemporary hand-coloured caricature, is from the collection of Gillray's works issued under the publisher's imprint John Miller, slightly smaller than the 1808 original, but the coloring is contemporary, not modern.
