About this Item
1916. Second edition. ix, 122pp., a frontispiece view of the Shrine, 28 black and white illustrations within the text and 6 plans and sections (some in colour and folding) at the end of the book, plus a 1 page review of the first edition. The Crypt of Lower Church of glasgow Cathedral has been described as one of the most perfect pieces of architecture in these islands, and it is also one one of the most interesting. On a visit to the Cathedral, the author noticed that the vaulting of the crypt or lower church was of several dates, whereas up till that time it had been supposed that the whole of the lower vaulting, with the exception of a small portion, was of one period and constituted one design. In this book the author corrects this assumption and provides a fascinating history and description of the Double Choir of the Cathedral. 'The Architectural Review' wrote of this work "Mr Watson.sets out his arguments, which turn on nice points of observation, with a lucidity that makes it a pleasure to follow him. His thread, if it runs into many intricacies, can be traced to safe issues. Glasgow crypt was plainly not of one but of many buildings, and our author takes us through them all, explaining the stages, and giving us the how and why of the crypt as we see it today." The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with white titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are bumped and the titling on the spine is very worn and is now indistinct. The contents are tight and clean with a little foxing on the illustrations and plans at the end of the book. The endpapers are browned with a name written on the front free endpaper. Loosely inserted at the front of the book are some old newspaper articles, an advertisement for 'The Book of Glasgow Cathedral' and a small staple-bound booklet on Glasgow Cathedral.
