About this Item
This G+ quality and likely first print book has no copyright but was copyrighted possibly in 1895--volume #1 was copyrighted in 1894 & #3 in 1896 and this book is published by Laird & Lee; it is 7-3/4" tall with 312 numbered pages of text followed by 3 unnumbered pages of ads; it is clearly a very early printing, either 1895 or 1896 and it lists the other three books in this series. This book has tannish-brown cloth with series name in red on spine and all other lettering in gilt, with a gilt eagle on top of the series name and a figure of a boy waif, in red & black, near the heel; the front panel has an image of two boys catching a fish from their small boat; author's name is in gilt and the title is in gilt outlined in brown (see photo). The book is square, free of edge dings with all four corners lightly bumped; the head and heel of the spine are also bumped with noticeable color loss. The bottom edges have a moderate amount of wear but the front corner is worn and the board is exposed. The spine is lightly soiled and very worn but, except for the series name, the lettering and image are intact. The front panel illustration is clean and free of serious damage. Both panels as well as the spine have dots and streaks of fabric color loss (see photo of rear panel)--there is no fabric damage, just color loss. Except for an inked 1896 gift inscription on the FFEP as well as a small book store stamp on the front pastedown, the interior is free of writing, stray marks page damage of any type; several pages have stains that are mostly confined to the margins. Both hinges are quite strong even though the paper covering the front hinge has torn, exposing the cheese cloth. The text paper is modestly toned and though a bit stiff is still flexible and not brittle. The frontis is on coated paper and it is clean and intact; there are 10 full page illustrations, 4 on coated paper, and a partial-page line drawing on plain paper at the beginning of each of the 24 chapters. The book has no remainder mark and is not a former library book. Seller Inventory # BMR-2020-8-12-3
