Size of the binding: 4 in. x 6 1/4 in., engraved frontispice of a globe, shown in outline, with bands of astrological signs, poles, meridian, horizon, etc., marked; printed title-page. [6]pp., pp. 1-62 + [4]pp. catalogue of books printed for D. Midwinter (many are mathematical or navigational aids). Printed on a thick, high-quality paper, in a large type face, with some typographic or woodcut ornaments. The Description and Use of Collins's Pocket-Quadrant is pp. 51-62. Bound in full, old calf with five raised bands on the spine, remains of a later, hand-labelled (tape) title label: Use of the Globe, remains of sewn headbands, red-sprinkled edges. The front cover is completely detached, with wear to the cover corners, edges and surfaces, the inner front hinge was been formerly strengthened with a leather hinge, a later owner has used a plastic type glue to hold the spine leather together, and an early inked name, date and inscription, and bookplate design has been abraded away at some point (J---? P---? 17--?); a printed, 1926 catalogue slip (possibly for this copy), and a printed bookseller's name & address, have also been pasted to the front flyleaf: Museum Book Store 45, Museum Street, London, W.C. Some age-related tanning to book edges, page margins, and tanning to the frontispiece. Scarce book. This early binding would benefit from restoration. "To the Reader. This short Account of the Globe was Originally design'd for the Use of such Gentlemen as learn Mathematicks of me at Home. But the Course of my Publick Lectures at the Marine Coffee-House in Birchin-Lane, obliging me to proceed next to the Doctrine of the Sphere; and the Books on this Subject already publish'd, being much too large, and filled with Matters very foreign to my Design; I thought it necessary to publish this Short Description and Use of the Globes, that my Auditory there may have the Matter in a much shorter, and yet I hope in as plain a View: For I know of nothing material that is here omitted. The Description and Use of Mr. Collins's Quadrant was occasionn'd by the Request of some Persons who would gladly know the best Uses of it, without being obliged to read over many things which are little to their purpose."
