1835 (vols 1 & 2 - second edition; 1840 vols 3 & 4 - first edition). [iii], 387pp. and a folding hand colured map; [iii]. 447pp.; [iii], v, [i], 333pp.; [iii], 363pp. The text of these volumes is in French. Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville (1805-1859), was a French aristocrat, diplomat, political scientist, political philosopher and historian. He is best known for his works 'Democracy in America' and 'The Old Regime and the Revolution'. In both, he analyzed the living standards and social conditions of individuals as well as their relationship to the market and state in Western societies. Democracy in America was published after Tocqueville's travels in the United States and is today considered an early work of sociology and political science. In Democracy in America he examines the democratic revolution that he believed had been occurring over the previous several hundred years. The four volumes are bound in near-uniform contemporary half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gold titling and five thin raised bands on the spines (the titling on volumes 1 & 2 is on red leather labels and the titling for volumes 3 & 4 is on calf coloured labels). The cases of the books are in very good condition with expected shelf wear on the boards and scuffing to the leather, particularly around the corners and spine edges where part of the top layer of the leather has been lifted. There is some damage with a little loss to the leather on the corner tips. The spines of all four volumes are noticeably faded. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the first and last few pages, including the title-pages, and some scattered light foxing elsewhere within the books. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: Extra postage will be required to cover tracking. Seller Inventory # gVIHistory06
