About this Item
Quarter plate daguerreotype. Image size approximately 3" x 4". Matted with preserver in original embossed leather case with red velvet pad inside the front cover cut with the photographer's name: "North / Artist / Cleveland". Professionally cleaned and resealed, the image is about fine, with some tarnish on the oval gold mat. Name of the photographer, Wm. C. North embossed on the mat. A mother stares pensively at the camera, holding a baby, likely post-mortem. Slight, delicate contemporary pink tinting on both of their cheeks, and gold tint on her necklace. The subjects of the photograph are unindentified. Our attribution of date suggested by the oval mat, preserver, and the case on the daguerreotype. North began his work as an itinerant, traveling between Ohio and New England. After settling in Cleveland in 1850, he quickly became the city's leading daguerreian portraitist. An attractive, albeit ineffably sadly image. Seller Inventory # 588485
