About this Item
Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a well-dressed African-American man. Matted with preserver in original thermoplastic case with purple-ish red cut velvet pad. The image size approximately 3" x 3.5". The plate has been professionally cleaned, with some tarnish on the left margin and on the shirt of the subject, else the image is crisp and near fine; the case is about fine. Image of a seated young businesslike African-American man with a dark beard, in shirt, vest, tie, and coat. We could find little clue as to the identity or location of the subject, although our instincts lead us to believe he was in the North. Our supposition as to the approximate date is based on the style of the mat, preserver and case. A nice cased antebellum portrait of an African-American man. Seller Inventory # 588303
