Paul Sandby (1731-1809), long considered the father of English watercolour painting, worked throughout Britain. He pictured the country in all its rural, urban, modern and historical aspects, from street life and domestic gardens, to royal parkland, ancient castles and ruined abbeys. His plan and sketch of the Battle of Culloden, 1746, are included in the section on the campaigns of the Duke of Cumberland. His brother, Thomas Sandby (1721-98) was an architect as well as a watercolour artist, who carried out landscape work in Windsor Great Park and designed buildings in the neighbourhood of Windsor and in London. Both the Sandbys were founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768. The compiler of the catalogue, Adolf Paul Oppe (1878-1957) was an art historian and collector who served as Deputy Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
