Octavo, 12 volumes. Text in German. Each volume contains 12 issues, which number between 32 and 48 pages on average, with several accompanied by frontispiece portraits and facsimiles. No March 1876 issue was published. In three-quarter morocco over pebbled cloth bindings, with raised bands, gilt titles, and yellow endpapers. Some general scuffing to the leather, with sun fading along the spines; else ein gutes sammlung. Bound run of 12 of the first 15 years of the leading German-American historical journal of the 19th century. Published under the auspices of The German Pioneer Society of Cincinnati, Der Deutsche Pionier was edited from 1874 to 1885 by Heinrich A. Ratterman (1832-1923), who emigrated with his family from Ankum, Germany to Cincinnati, Ohio. Initially, the emphasis was on Cincinnati, the Midwest, and the 1830 emigration, but ultimately it incorporated the records and achievements of notable German-Americans throughout the United States from before the Revolution to the 1880s. As a mirror of an ethnic minority, Der Deutsche Pionier is a storehouse of countless biographies, sketches of early life, personal experiences, adventures, travels, anecdotes, reports on German cultural events, responses to the Anglo-American environment, and statistical information on German-Americans.
