About this Item
Reprinted from the Second(1874) English edition, revised and augmented, for Burt's Library of the World's Best Books. Illustrated with numerous figures and drawings throughout the text just as the original but with the addition of a frontispiece portrait of Charles Darwin. 8vo, in the publisher's original dark olive cloth, the upper cover embossed with Burt's logo in blind, the spine gilt lettered and with the Burt logo in gilt. vii, 797pp., 8 pp. catalogue. A nice vintage copy in format and appearance quite similar to the second edition from which it was reprinted. The cloth remains dark and rich with just a bit of mellowing and minor wear at the extremities, internally with a touch of age to the paper but clean and solid, a few old notations or marks in pencil and easily removable, hinges a bit shaky. ONE OF DARWIN S MOST IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT WORKS. In the preface to the second edition, Darwin wrote of "the fiery ordeal through which this book has passed." Profiting from the criticism leveled at the text together with a number of new facts several correspondents had given him, Darwin revised and added to his book. However, his "conviction of the power of sexual selection remains unshaken." The word 'evolution' occurred, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume. The last chapter is about sexual selection in relation to man, and ends with the statement about man's lowly origin, "the wording of which differs slightly in the first edition from that which is usually quoted" (Freeman, p. 129).
