First edition, proof copy: [Gallup A66a]. Illustrated by David Jones. Octavo. Sewn printed wrappers. [4]pp. A fine copy in publisher's printed envelope with a bit of tanning and foxing, very good. An unusual proof' (or variant issue) of this title, not noted by Gallup, a presumed proof' copy with a pencil notation on front cover stating "proof" (in unknown hand); the typography of the title page in terms of layout differs from the published version. For example: 1) the location of "David Jones" on title page is different on the proof copy, it is 3" from the top edge on the published book and on the proof copy is 3 7/16" from top edge. 2) the location of top edge of "Faber and Faber" on the title page is 1.5" from the bottom edge on the final published book and on this proof copy the top edge of "Faber and Faber" is only 1" from the bottom edge. Note: the distance between "David Jones" and "Faber and Faber" on both the proof and the final published book is 4", so the layout differences are not due to the trimming of margins, it is due to the layout design of the sheets. 3) the type is much darker bold face on the published book than it is on the proof' copy. 4) the color of the printed wrappers differs slightly between the blue color of the proof and that of the final published book.
