Large decorative hardcover, 9x12 inches, 84 very thick heavy pages. Handsomely illustrated. A Narrative poem about the early days of the Plymouth Colony established by the Mayflower Pilgrims. Set in 1621, with Indian Wars and a love triangle between three of the Mayflower passengers - John Alden, Miles Standish and Priscilla Mullins. The origin of the famous line: "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" Scores of illustrations by Houghton, Merrill, Reinhart, Perkins, Hitchcock, Shapleigh and others -- some full page with tissue guards, some within the text. Frontispiece illustration showing Priscilla at her spinning wheel. Handsome hardcover, with large titles and ornate decoration on the front and back covers. Very good condition, top corners slightly bumped, neatly penned Christmas inscription dated 1889 on the blank endpaper. Uncommon edition. Seller Inventory # 001524
