About this Item
Size: 4to. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Illustrated paper over boards, deckle edges, originally published with 100 sections of three pages of text printed into columns, each preceded by the same wood engraved header illustration signed by Gavarni, and a full-page Gavarni lithograph relating to the printed text with caption; two different prints numbered 7 (the first should be No. 6), numbers 8 and 9 are reversed in order; this copy, through a binding error, lacks illustration and text No. 93, pages 369-372, and No. 91 pages 373-376 "Un Autre Mazeppa" appears twice (the pagination is quite mixed up - after No. 90, page 360, the page numbers jump to 373-376, No. 91, then goes back to pages 365-368, No. 92, then repeats pages 373-376, No. 91, skips No. 93 altogether, but the pagination goes back to page 373, this time to No. 94 pages numbered 373-376; from that point on, the pages & illustrations follow in order; so, there are no pages 361-364 or illustration No. 93). Covers worn, soiled, & stained, spine stitched to boards, binding tenuous with some pages holding on by one thread, foxing throughout though sometimes very light or not present, pages soiled here and there from handling, some of the lithographs are foxed, some not or very lightly. Paul Gavarni was the nom de plume of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (1804-1866), a French caricaturist, born in Paris. His name was exceedingly popular, and his illustrations for books were eagerly sought for by publishers. A single frontispiece or vignette was sometimes enough to secure the sale of a new book. Illustrator: Gavarni, Paul. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 4 lbs 0 oz. Category: Art & Design; Books; Humour. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 010079. This is a heavy book and may require extra shipping charges especially to International destinations. Seller Inventory # 010079
