Spine title is Bonaparte's Intercepted Letters. Boards green. Hinges repaired professionally. Faint mark on rear. Light wear to extremities. Small tear in second frontispiece. Pages neat and clean. 4 p. of publisher's ads at rear. As the title explains, this volume contains documents and letters from Napoleon's army in Egypt that were intercepted by British and allied shipping. Each letter is translated into English with additional information in footnotes. The publication of these letters was not without controversy at the time, and the British newspaper quoted on pp. ii-iii believed the printing of private correspondence "derogates from the character of a nation to decend to such gossiping. One of these letters is from Bonaparte to his Brother, complaining of the profligacy of his wife." Neverthless, the publisher claimed to have printed only what was tasteful: "We trust that we have not admitted any thing that can raise a blush on the cheek of our readers, either for themselves or for us.".
