About this Item
2 parts in one volume [as issued], small 12mo, pp [12], 412, title page in red and black, paginated continusouly, with part one finishing at the end of Prince Lutin at page 202, part 2 commencing on page 203 with La Princesse Printaniere, bound in contemporary plain unlettered sheep, the joints cracked, spine ends worn, rubbed, the upper joint neatly re-inforced internally, pen trials and other early notes to front endpapers, a good copy internally, FIRST EDITION THUS, an extremely rare early printing of D'Aulney's fairy stories or at least many of them. Candidate for rebacking with its somewhat delicate joints? Well, perhaps not, because the plain original spine without numbering indicates this as a separate issue from Rey's 'Cabinet des Fees' which he does in fact advertise in the preliminary leaves in some detail [as was Rey's usual practice], this volume also issued as volume three of that collection - which did not, of course, entirely comprise fairy stories by D'Aulnoy - and containing nine stories, mostly reprinted from D'Aulnoy's first collection of circa 1692. Volume four contained stories from the 'Nouveau Contes.' of the same author. Early collections of D' Aulnoy fairy stories are quite desirable and hard to locate. A copy of this one, however, may be found in the Buckmaster Collection in the library of the University of Leeds, possibly together with the Nouveau Contes, though this is not mentioned in the catalogue. In view of the spine's importance to this copy perhaps a custome made box would be a better home for it. Seller Inventory # 28343
