In good condition. Leather remains soft with small areas of dryness. Darker staining to boards. End papers are toned on edges. Small tear on front paste down proper left top corner. Previous owner s name in graphite on title page. Small dampness stain on title and dedication page top edge. Text is clean and unmarked. Toning to rear segment of text block, possibly from different type of paper in printing process. Errata page has chip on top proper right corner. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Completed in 1774 ( though not published until this book appeared in 1785 ), this was the first American-written epic poem, an allegorical work in which Canaan is actually America and that foreshadowed and depicted struggles of the American Revolution. This book is dedicated to George Washington. Dwight taught at Yale and later became the school s sixth president. During the Revolution, he served as chaplain to the Connecticut Continental Brigade until the death of his father in 1778. Seller Inventory # RAREA1785DJKA
