About this Item
Large tabloid newspaper. Single sheet, 4 pp. Single issue of longest continuously published newspaper in the United States, now published as the Hartford Courant. The newspaper was founded in 1764, and was first published as a weekly, becoming daily in 1837. The first and last page are devoted to ads for various businesses, with the interior pages providing state and national news, mostly political coverage. Of note is a short piece recalling the naval battle between the USS United States commanded by Stephen Decatur and the British ship, the Macedonian. Decatur emerged victorious in this battle, taking the Macedonian back to the US. The battle was part of the War of 1812. Also present is another shortish account of fighting in Canada as part of the war. GOOD condition. Heavy chipping, tearing and creasing along the spine, with moderate loss, rendering the paper somewhat fragile when opened. Horizontal crease along the lower fourth of the paper. Moderate toning, minor soiling and staining, with a few faint dampstains. Small piece torn off the upper front corner. Seller Inventory # 019440
