1754 GAMES Compleat Gamester Card Games Dice Billiards French Rev PROVENANCE The Compleat Gamester was a 17th-century games periodical, often thought to be the first sort of English games and leisure magazine. While it was originally published by an unknown collaborator, it was eventually taken over by Richard Seymour in the early 18th-century. Numerous card and dice games were covered in the first 1674 edition, along with billiards, board games, chess, and backgammon. Other games include Whist, cribbage, putt, ombre, and piquet. A century later, Charles Johnson continued Seymour s popular printings retaining the popular section the gentleman s diversion which included descriptions of archery, racing, horse riding, and bowling. This particular example was owned by Viscount Francis Grouvel, a general in the French Empire during the French Revolution and Restoration. Enlisting in the military while still in his teens, Grouvel rose to prominence through his conduct in numerous military campaigns through Italy, Germany, and Spain. Under the Restoration, he was created a hereditary baron in 1816, then vicomte in 1824. He continued his military career during the period of peace that followed, becoming Inspector General of Cavalry as early as 1816. He was elevated to the rank of lieutenant general in 1825.
