The first work is particularly uncommon. It is lacking the title page but pagination and text accords with the Second Edition of 1813. Contains discussion of the murder of children, the burning of women, revenue derived from idolatry, means of extending Christianity, translations and new editions of scripture, missions in: East Indies, West Indies, Bengal, Madras, Bombay, Ceylon, South Africa, New South Wales, Java, Mauritius, Bourbon, West Africa, Malta. &c. Full title is: Colonial Ecclesiastical Establishment: being a brief view of the state of the colonies of Great Britain, and of her Asiatic empire, in respect to religious instruction, prefaced by some considerations on the national duty of affording it, to which is added a sketch of an ecclesiastical establishment of British India. 212 pages. The second work includes chapters: On the Practicability of civilizing the Natives; On the Policy of civilizing the Natives; On the impediments to the Civilization of the Natives - the philosophical spirit of Europeans an Impediment to the Civilization of the Natives; The sanguinary Superstitions. and Numerous Holidays of the Natives an impediment.&c. Considerable appendices, including discussion of sacrifice of children, funereal burning of wives, Jewish scriptures at Cochin and Syrian Christians, Sanskrit [Shanscrit] testimonies of Christ, Chinese version of Scripture, &c. This copy lacks the final leaf of the appendix [page 159/60] but has the advert leaf page 161/2 of Other Works by the same author. [16], ix, 162 pages. Two books bound in one. Solid leather binding with marbled endpapers and now-faded marbled page edges. Pencil marks to front endpaper (from coin rubbing; scribbling to verso of front endpaper and ownership notation to head of Contents page and to recto and verso of rear endpaper. Final leaf (advert leaf) is soiled and torn but remains well attached. Save for the missing title page of the first work and the missing final leaf of the second, all pages firmly bound and clean, with light foxing to the first half of the second volume.
