About this Item
Letterhead from this short-lived John Birch Society (JBS) front group established in late 1959 to oppose a repeal of the loyalty oath in the National Defense Education Act. The group was chaired by Harold Bailey of Hartford, CT, who appears on the partial list of committee members. Other notable members included JBS founder Robert Welch, founding JBS member Revilo P. Oliver, who was forced to resign his membership in 1966 due to his increasingly public anti-Semitism, & Medford Evans (professor and managing editor of The Citizen, the journal of the Citizens Council). The CGAETGE was formed concurrently with the Hartford chapter of the JBS in November 1959, which was reported on p. 9 of the December 31, 1959 issue of the JBS Bulletin. As described by Welch, "We are in the process of setting up another one of our comparatively small fronts. This one is aimed at making more articulate and more visible the opposition to the attitude recently taken by Pusey of Harvard, Griswold of Yale, and other college presidents, with regard to the loyalty oath requirement for students borrowing government money. It is called COLLEGE GRADUATES AGAINST EDUCATING TRAITORS AT GOVERNMENT EXPENSE. We know that this is "negative" in its approach, but so is a physician "negative 11 in being against diptheria, or in trying to get a poison virus out of the bloodstream. There are times when it is important and wise to be against something, when that very "destructiveness " is part of a larger construc tive purpose to restore health to the American nation." Printed on an 11" x 8 ½" sheet. Fine. Seller Inventory # 11280
