About this Item
Three items pertaining to the third annual celebration of the work of the explorer Richard E. Byrd in envisioning Antarctica as a "Great White Continent of Peace" and the signing of the international Antarctic Treaty. The treaty established Antarctica as a scientific preserve, with freedom of scientific investigation. It banned any military activity & was the first arms control agreement of the Cold War. The emphasis in these items is on the nature of the treaty as a milestone in mankind's struggle for peace. Items included are: an invitation by the Richard Byrd Fellowship to the anniversary service at the Memorial at Mount Victoria, with the date of the service in the United States handwritten at the lower right; a program from the services, staple bound, 5pp; and another staple bound collection of items 8pp, including a statement on the significance of the treaty, photographs of the monument to Byrd, newspaper articles and text of the treaty. Small mark from paper clip at upper left corner of the invitation card. Seller Inventory # 15804
