First Edition thus, original marbled boards, neatly rebacked and recornered in modern tan calf with black morocco label. Sm.8vo, c.pp326 without half-title, an excellent stout and attractive copy. With engraved vignettes in text. ** Scarce. First new edition of Ritson's famous compilation on Robin Hood : originally issued in 1795 in 2 vols with Bewick woodcuts. This is 'a reprint of that work, which is now become exceedingly scarce and expensive', but retaining only some parts of Ritson's lengthy editorial notes. For this edition, printed by the outstanding M'Creery, an important printer of the day, new non-Bewick woodcuts were used. Aimed at a serious juvenile audience and issued to catch the rising tide of interest in Robin Hood engendered by Scott's Ivanhoe, issued earlier in this same year. This 1820 Robin Hood is a relatively unknown edition, falling between the 1st Edition 1795 and Pickering's 2nd Edition of 1832.
