Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) was a Canadian judge, politician and writer, best known for his creation of Samuel Slick, the opinionated clockmaker of Nova Scotia, who was introduced to the world in a regular column in the Novascotian, beginning in 1835. Slick's attacks on his countrymen and the age in which they lived were littered with witty aphorisms that have since become part of the English language. "This country is going to the dogs", "he drank like a fish", ?the early bird gets the worm", "it's raining cats and dogs", "you can't get blood out of a stone" and "truth is stranger than fiction" are among those well-known sayings that started life in Haliburton's satirical sketches. Heavy set. U.K. postage at default charge but overseas buyers may be asked for a little extra. Enquiries welcome. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured. The cost of shipping to Europe by Surface Mail (i.e. Standard Shipping option) is often as much as by Airmail and it is actually higher than Airmail for any package weighing 800 gms or more. As a result, we always ship to Europe by Airmail. Surface Mail can be significantly cheaper when shipping to the Rest of the World so both options are quoted but delivery times can be very lengthy so we do not recommend this service.
