About this Item
Broadside advertising the Shanghai silk company with text in Chinese and English, illustrated with woodcut of the silk company at the upper right. Chinese silk production for foreign markets had benefited from the near collapse of the European silk industry caused by the silkworm disease pebrine during the 1850s and 1860s; Nanjing Road became the earliest shipping street in Shanghai and over time, the premier shopping street in China. Text and border printed in red, on thin brown paper. Paper size: 10 1/2" x 16. Original folds, cracked on fold lines, tears to the left edge with some marginal loss, ruffled. Image complete.
