About this Item
© 1971: A stand-alone novel by Vincent King. 1st printing of 1972 edition. SFBC #186. Previous owner's (small & very neat!) name & address label to front endpaper:- Synopsis: After a millennium of comfortable dependence on machines, in a world city which has rebuilt itself in successive layers over the earth and now stands on a night-black, rotten structure of supporting girders, degenerating humanity is at the mercy of the Machine and its cohorts of wheeled, death-dealing Teachers. The masses in the Streets of the city are eugenically controlled and are processed through the Rites; the failures are brain-washed and the few chosen are admitted into the Corps, an elite which is attempting the salvation of man through flight to other galaxies.
