About this Item
Large paper copy limited to 150 copies, printed December 1894, text laid out within wide margins. Royal 8vo (10.25 x 7.5 ins) pp xxxi, 163; illustrated with the frontispiece, including tissue guard, and line drawings by Hugh Thomson including many full-page examples. Finely bound in late half calf over blue boards by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, raised bands with double gilt fillets and gilt lettering to the spine. Boards slightly stained and calf a touch rubbed. Top edge gilt. A handsome library copy [Spielmann & Jerrold 13] The poetry consists of short vignettes, often on country characters or pursuits, perhaps written as ballads to be set to music. 'Coridon' refers to a stock character of ancient pastoral poetry and is mentioned as one of the title characters in the Broadside ballad Coridon and Parthenia. Thomson's engaging style is wholly redolent the nostalgia of the time, his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle county-set society appealing to the imagination of the public. He worked on two books for his friend the poet Austin Dobson, The Ballad of Beau Brocade (1892) and The Story of Rosina (1895). This collection represents a further collaboration.
