About this Item
Quarto (20.5 x 23 cm; plate size 17 x 19.5 cm). Some light foxing and dusting, but very good. An attractive impression of Hogarth's famous etching depicting Christoper Columbus's apocryphal demonstration in response to detractors who were downplaying the difficulty associated with his voyage of discovery to the New World. The print shows Columbus having just demonstrated the method for making the egg stay upright. His audience look on in amazement and one man behind him beats his forehead in frustration at the simplicity of the solution. At either end of the table are men caught still in the act of attempting to balance eggs. This example is in the second of two states; the earlier state was issued in April 1752 as the subscription ticket for his forthcoming book, THE ANALYSIS OF BEAUTY. Two vestiges of the subscription text are visible along the lower edge of the plate. PAULSON 194 ii/ii, BM (Satires) 3192. Seller Inventory # WRCLIT88369
