'This MANUSCRIPT came to the NORWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY from the ESTATE of Jerry C. Partridge, who was GEORGE WHITMAN'S great-grandson, by courtesy of his wife, Frances C. Partridge. GEORGE W. WHITMAN, of WOODSTOCK, MAINE, was a private in COMPANY F, of the 17th MAINE INFANTRY REGIMENT in the CIVIL WAR. he was accustomed to keeping a DIARY of DAILY ACTIVITIES, and had every intention of RECORDING his WARTIME TRAVELS. he was very AWARE of the SIGNIFICANCE of this CONFLICT to the NATION, and made a considerable EFFORT to RECOLLECT and RECORD his EXPERIENCES, in the years just after the WAR.' This booklet contains DRAWINGS copied from 'an 1899 Portfolio of War and Nation; the CIVIL WAR in the UNITED STATES.' The contents includes: REGIMENTAL HISTORY, BRIEF BIOGRAPHY, MARCHING to GETTYSBURG, FAIRFAX HOSPITAL, PEACH ORCHARD ADVENTURE, WOUNDED at WILDERNESS, WOUNDED at COLD HARBOR, FUN on PICKET DUTY, and more. 69 pages complete with B&W ILLUSTRATIONS throughout.
