About this Item
14pp. [bound with:] ACTS AND LAWS OF HIS MAJESTY'S PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND. Boston. 1759-1770. 24,[2],568pp. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands, gilt leather label. Very minor shelf wear. Bookplate on front pastedown. Titlepage lightly toned, top half-inch trimmed away. Light toning and some foxing throughout. Else very good. A fine mid-18th-century collection of the laws of Massachusetts. As is often the case with this and earlier collected editions, this copy includes the separately issued CHARTER (here bound first) and the full compilation of laws for 1759, with the addition of twenty-six subsequent separately printed session laws through 1770. Among the acts printed here are the Stamp Act, as well as the act indemnifying those afflicted by the Stamp Act. The miscellaneous acts and laws provide a massive body of New England legal, social, and economic information. They paint a vivid picture of the development of the region, with the founding of towns and public works such as the building of the Plymouth lighthouse. But throughout, the presence of tariff acts and taxes map the route to the American Revolution. Charter: EVANS 8400. Acts: EVANS 8399, 8913- 6, 9173-6, 9428-9, 9721-4, 10052-4, 10370-3, 10675-7, 10959-60, 11723. Seller Inventory # WRCAM44581
