Georges Carpentier (1894-1975) was born near Lens in the Pas-de-Calais region of France. He fought mainly as a light heavyweight in a career lasting from 1908 to 1926 and by the age of 15 was Champion of France. Nicknamed the "Orchid Man," he stood 5 ft 11½ inches and his fighting weight ranged from 125 to 175lb. Carpentier was known for his speed, his excellent boxing skills and his extremely hard punch.
