Small 8vo. 5 x 7.25 inches. vii + [i] + 143 pp. + [1]. Bound in original purple cloth, gilt with blind stamped decoration on boards. Slight wear to extremities but otherwise a fine clean copy. Label, Bound by W. Bone and Son, 76 Fleet St., London, E.C. on rear pastedown. Illustrated by engraved folding map at front. A very scarce Romney Marsh item. The author (1826-96), introducing a large amount of evidence for his theory, argues that Caesar's expeditions to Britain were launched from Boulogne and landed at Appledore. The first part of the book is devoted to a inquiry into the formation of the Marsh and its early history; the second part is an account of Caesar's two expeditions to Britain of 55 and 54 BC, from the Gallic War Books IV-V, but related to a fleet arriving at the bay of Appledore. The theory of a Roman landing on Romney Marsh was first put forward by Thomas Lewin (1859 and 62) and this author is cited a few times at the beginning of the work. Fine copy of a scarce title.
