About this Item
Cloth, folio, gilt spine-title, 45 cm, Unpaginated, approximately 200 pp, profusely illustrated. An important reference . As one of the press comments on the book had it, " A formidable erudition has not prevented these two scholars from illustrating their themes in a way that is highly attractive to the general reader.' From the blurb - "-British artists living far from the Mediterranean were nevertheless not entirely isolated from the Continent. It is therefore possible to distinguish between the different phases of Mediterranean influence which affected British Art. Thus the history of the relation between British and Mediterranean art might almost be termed the most essential chapter of the history of British art in general. The present publication originated in an Exhibition produced during the war by the Warburg Institute (University of London), which is devoted to the study of the classical tradition. It is essentially a picture book, pre senting pictorial comparisons with a short explanatory text. The examples, however, were chosen to demonstrate the connection between different spheres of British civilization. The contents range from late antique mystery cults in Britain, medieval science and Chaucer, to Elizabethan literature, emblematics and stage design, as well as Handel and Pope. The intention of the authors was to appeal not only to the art historian but also to the ordinary English student." Arranged in 86 sections, each of which occupies a two-page opening divided between text and illustrations. Comprehensively indexed. For this reprint edition: "Corrections have been reduced to a minimum. Actual mistakes have been emended and as far as possible changes of ownership and interpretation have been incorporated.". Covers a little scuffed and rubbed, edges a little spotted, otherwise Near Very Good. . Seller Inventory # ABE-59308
