About this Item
An ebony wood letter opener for The Black Star Line, Ghana's national shipping corporation, which is named after Marcus Garvey's shipping line that ran from 1919 to 1922. Ghanian Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah was profoundly influenced by Garvey's thought and pan-africanism; his nation lead the charge of decolonization with its declaration of independence from the UK in 1957. The letter opener's handle is carved with his bust. 8 3/4" x 1" x 3/4". Words "SHIP WITH BLACK STAR LINE" carved into one side of the blade. A few small chips or possibly serrations to edge of blade.
