Elephant folio. Unpaginated. Rebound in red cloth boards. All edges gilt. The work is a collection of 20 fascinating heliogravure plates featuring paintings of 18th century Ashkenazi Jewish family life by Moritz Oppenheim. The plates are accompanied by text from Leopold Stein. Each plate measures approximately 7.5 x 9" and is printed in high quality heliogravure after the original paintings, on tissue, laid down on heavy card stock. All plates feature captions beneath in German, and have their original tissue guards. Scenes include, Sabbath observance, Bar-mitzvah, a wedding, the synagogue, the Festival of Sukkot, and Purim among many others. Text in German. This is a newer edition of the initial 1882 collection, originally issued as a portfolio. Binding with some light bumping and rubbing to the extremities, and some minor rippling to the boards. Spine lightly sunned. The back cover has some light smudges and bumping. Interior with two pages of the introduction detached. Ex-libris pasted on at the interior front cover. Starting at the title page and the table of contents. Some of the tissue guard have some light rippling and/or some closed tears. The corners of a few of the plates with small creases or light chips. All images unaffected. Book block tight overall. Binding in very good-, interior in good- to very good condition overall. Seller Inventory # 42613
