About this Item
FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Contemp. half sheep with marbled boards, spine richly gilt. xvi, 180 pp. Five folding lithographed plates. Slightly rubbed; a very good copy. It was Napoleon who said of the German physicist, Ernst E.F. Chladni (1756-1827) that "Chladni has made sound visible." Using clamped plates of various materials with fine sand on their top surfaces, Chladni demonstrated vibration patterns ('Chladni figures') formed in the sand by drawing a bow down the plate's edge. With his acoustical equipment and musical instruments, Chladni traveled through Europe demonstrating and performing. The present book is "the first account of the author's euyphonium and clavicylinder, an improvement on the former, the construction of which had hitherto been held secret. Both instruments were distinguished by their beautifully mellow tone, and were used by the author in public performances to eke out a diminished income owing to his acoustic experiments, but neither ever came into general use." (Sotheran/Zeitlinger, 2nd suppl., no. 4636). D.S.B. 3: 258-259. Heralds of Science 150 - 1787 'Neue Entdeckkungen' and noting his invention of the euphonium. See: PMM 233. Seller Inventory # 000164
