About this Item
Size: Folio. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. No date, but circa 1856, disbound (removed) from what was probably a bound volume of sheet music, lithography by Sarony & Company, 13 pages complete, sectional with programmatic captions (The Heights around Sebastopol, The Sentry Walks the Tented Grounds, etc.). Wonderful battle scene on front page showing cannons firing at ships in the harbor, soldiers hauling cannons about and loading cannons, officers on horseback, officers directing the troops. Would look very nice framed. Back cover is blank. Chipped along edges, front cover at spine had been reinforced, but is now pretty much separated, several small stains, a stamp of a music shop in Montréal as well as a Clifton Park, New York music store embossed stamp. Note in photos, the color intensity is between that shown in the two photos. It was difficult to get the color just right. The siege of the city, home of Russia's Black Sea Fleet both then and now, was the culminating episode of the Crimean War. The Russians were defeated, escaping to the north of the city over a pontoon bridge, but not before scuttling their entire fleet both to prevent it from falling into enemy hands and to block an easy entrance of the western alliance's ships into the port of Sevastopol. This siege has given rise to many other historic pop-culture references, including 'The Thin Red Line,' "The Charge of the Light Brigade," and the celebrated work of Florence Nightingale.
