A vivid and truthful description of the life of a Union volunteer in all its different phases--on the battlefield, in the prison den, at the picket line, & in the camp and bivouac. In fact, a recital of, possibly, as varied and thrilling events as were known during all the wild vicissitudes of that terrible four years of internecine strife." In 633 pages + 16 pages on glossy paper containing photos, maps, & steel engravings of battles, prisons, & personnel. Bearing the 1887 copyright by the Hubbard Brothers, this is an unknown printing, but roughly contemporaneous, a hardcover octavo in the publisher's medium blue cloth ruled, decorated, & lettered in black & bright gilt to front board & spine. Condition is VG+: exceptionally clean & bright, with minor rubbing to extremities & lightly, but noticeably, bumped corners. Pages significantly tanned, heaviest around edges, but still supple & completely unmarked save for a bit of spotting/light staining to most all endpapers.Dark spots & rubbing to rear board.
