Small 8vo. 4 x 6.5 inches (10 x 16 cm.). 458 pp. Text in Gothic script and German. Bound in nineteenth century half calf, gilt, over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt with contrasting morocco title label, gilt. Some foxing, especially p. 183-9, but otherwise a very good example. Armourial bookplate of H. Moody. Novel first published in Leipzig, 1803. There is no normal title page no date no publisher. The title lettering on the spine is in English. This copy may lack the title page. August Heinrich Julius Lafontaine (1758-1831), was a prolific novelist born in Brunswick, who wrote sentimental novels of domestic life, much in favour at the court of Prussia, and more popular than Goethe in his day.
