McDade says, "This is a New Haven, Connecticut, case in which Jennie Cramer was found dead, face down in water. Malley was cleared and the death may have been accidental. Edmund Pearson credits this case with starting the famous series of dime novels in which was introduced one of the most celebrated detectives of paperback fiction: Old Cap Collier." Malley, a member of New Haven's wealthy family which owned the Malley Company, a cornerstone of New Haven's retail merchants, was one of Jennie's many admirers.
