About this Item

Description:

A fascinating series of mostly long letters (nine complete; five incomplete) to Sinclair-Loutit's (soon to be ex-) common law wife, Janetta (nee Woolley; formerly Slater; later Kee, Jackson and, finally, Parlad) from various postings, initially in Sarajevo and Belgrade as Director of the Relief and Rehabilitation Administration of the nascent United Nations and subsequently as the World Health Organisation's medical advisor to the South-East Asia Office of UNICEF in Bangkok. The content is divided between describing his work and travels for the organisations and forlorn attempts to save his failing relationship - Janetta having begun an affair with their mutual friend the war-hero and broadcaster Robert Kee shortly after Kenneth's departure for Yugoslavia. "Today I have been to Travnik & then to the little village of Fojnica. It is completely burnt out after a thorough raping by Draza Mihailovic & Co. It's beautifully situated among the lower wooded hills S of the Bosna river and the Travnik-Sarajevo road. It is Mahomedan [sic] country - the women all veil & wear turkish trousers. The crops are terribly scorched. I went into one peasant house they had just rebuilt - a log cabin rough hewn logs cracks stuffed with moss. Father away the two month journey with bullock cart to get grain from Vojvodina. Kids (3) + adolescent + Ma + Grandma living off two cows & and a scorched garden. Immense dignity & and simple friendliness, had some milk & gave some ointment for kids' impetigo." (Sarajevo, n.d. [1944 or 1945].) Sinclair-Loutit had a very interesting life, kicking-off by interrupting his medical studies at Cambridge to serve as a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War. The incomplete state of some of the letters is presumably the result of the fiery Janetta having destroyed some of the pages. Soiling and creases to some pages but generally in very good condition.
