About this Item
Folio (21 4/8 x 17 inches). 52 FINE engraved maps most double-page, but including some folding and single-page, all with contemporary hand-colour in outline and mounted on guards (map of "Cote occidentale de l'Afrique" repaired along the bottom edge). Contemporary half red morocco, marbled paper boards (worn at extremities with minor loss, some surface tears). AN ATTRACTIVE COMPOSITE ATLAS. Including fine maps relating to America "Hemisphere Occidental ou du Nouveau Monde" (1786); "Amerique Meridionale" (1748), in three maps; "Canada Louisiane et Terres Angloises" (1775), in three maps; "Le Fleuve Saint-Laurent". Following the death of Guillaume Delisle, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville continued the line of progressive French cartographers which had begun with Nicolas Sanson in the previous century. He was a scrupulous editor of maps and his work spanned most of the eighteenth century. He was concerned equally with the classical and modern worlds and he was continually updating the geographical content of his maps. cf. Shirley, British Library T.ANV-2b (calling for 60 maps).
