About this Item
1836. Second edition. iv, 164pp., vignette on the title-page, and a few illustrations within the text. Thomas Tod Stoddart (1810-1880) was a Scottish angler and poet. In 1833 he was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates, but never practised the law. An early passion for angling became the main business of his life. He investigated the haunts and habits of fish, was an adept of fly-making, and published books, poems and articles on angling. This volume on angling in Scotland was first published in 1835, and is based on his articles on angling for Chamber's Journal. It includes sections on rivers, lochs, tackle, flies, bait fishing, the pike, trout, par, artificial fish ponds, and angling districts. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a paper title label on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining on the boards. The corners are lightly bumped with wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are more heavily bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth on the spine corners. The titling on the spine is worn and there is soiling to the title label on the front board. The contents are tight and clean with some light soiling on the endpapers. There is no inscription.
