Gilchrist was a missionary in Angola, formerly Portuguese West Africa, at a time when this meant deep study: he and his wife Harriet Killam spent a year in Portugal before going to Angola, studying both Portuguese and African languages. Dr. Gilchrist also attained a diploma in Tropical Medicine from the University of Lisbon. He would spent the rest of his career in Angola, except for his service in World War Two, for which he earned an Order of the British Empire.
