About this Item
Amsterdam, Clement de Jonghe, ca. 1647-1650. Oblong broadside (42.5 x 53.3 cm). Printed on two, combined leaves; partially coloured in red. Printed surface 50.5 x 40.0 cm. = A fine print, published by the Amsterdam printer, and publisher Clement de Jonghe (1624 or 1625-1677). De Jonghe started the firm in 1647 and it was continued by his widow until two tears after his death. The right (west) side of the panorama shows the completed Noorderkerk and Westerkerk, indicating that the image was drawn or engraved after 1637. On the left (east) side, the St. Anthoniesdijk is - still - outside the city walls, indicating that it was drawn and engraved before ca. 1650. Around that time, the Oostelijke Eilanden with the VOC wharf were developed, which from then on would obscure this view. Below the image is an anonymous poem, being an ode to Amsterdam in three languages (Latin, Dutch, French). The engraving is by the Dutch artist and engraver, Rombout van den Hoeye (1622-1691), who made similar long views of, for instance, Vlissingen [Flushing], Antwerp, and London. The colouring, in red only, is not recent and might be contemporary. Slight irregularities at the edges, otherwise very good, unmarked. Not in any major reference work. Seller Inventory # 71989
